What we look at on local roofs
London roofing work varies widely by building type. Access, shared roof lines, parapets, roof terraces, parking and scaffold space can affect the method as much as the roof covering itself, so location and photographs are useful at first contact.
Before you ring, jot down the postcode, which part of the roof is affected and when you first noticed it. If the weather changes what happens indoors, mention that too. Photos from the ground or the loft help. Never climb up on a wet roof.

Identify whether the roof is detached, terraced, shared, above an extension or constrained by adjacent buildings.
Permissions and access
Flag landlord, freeholder, neighbour or scaffold considerations before work is arranged.

- Get the trading name, a direct number and a real address you could post a letter to
- Ask for the scope in writing, including what gets stripped out and what goes back on
- Compare quotes line by line rather than on the total at the bottom
- Ask to see a job photographed start to finish, not one glossy final shot
- Check insurance and any trade memberships yourself instead of taking the logo on the van for it
